“Notarios” = Fraude de inmigración
In Spanish-speaking countries, “notarios” are skilled lawyers who specialize in tax and immigration issues. Not so here. Our “notaries” are just supposed to verify identities. But many unscrupulous people use the confusion between the English and Spanish words to peddle unlawful immigration services. Not only can people lose a lot of money, but they could also lose their path to citizenship and be deported. Government Imposter Scams (Spanish)
This fotonovela follows the story of a young woman who gets a call from a man who claims to be from the government – and convinces her to send him money. It offers advice on how to tell when a phone call, text or email is from a government imposter and the dangers of wiring money to someone you don’t know.
Debt Collectors (Spanish)
The vivid illustrations in this short graphic novel (fotonovela) tell the story of how the main character, Juan, learns his rights about dealing with debt collectors. He learns about situations where debt collector’s practices are unfair and illegal. He also learns where to go for information and to file a complaint.
Debt Relief Scams (Spanish)
This fotonovela alerts readers to the common signs of a debt relief scam and tells them where they can find legitimate credit counseling help.
Income Scams (Spanish)
The messages in this “fotonovela” alert Latino consumers to the signs of an income scam, and can help reduce the risks of being taken. The story is based on the facts of a recent lawsuit filed by the FTC against a telemarketing company that was targeting Spanish-speakers nationwide.
